    Neither. The glass widens as it gets towards the top. Increasing volume with height means what appears to be the empty apparent upper half is actually a higher volume than the part with liquid in it. Thus; The glass is slightly less than half filled.

    Unless the curvature of the bottom increases the volume to be greater than the perceived volume.

    In science, one uses the most logical and fastest and most dominant way to describe something. If it is less than half full of water, then that is how it is written. You put the measurable subject, in this case water, over the default, air.

    Math is our way of interpreting the universe: it is everything and everything is it. So, in many ways, science is maths. Extraterrestrials may have a different way of interpreting maths, but it is still the same thing. Math simply exists.

    I heard that it is an expression to show optimism (half full) or pessimism (half empty). So maybe it could be a world wide view?
