    You can microwave water for tea. However, ceramics can have microscopic flaws in them that let air in between tiny cracks. When heated quickly from a cold temperature, this can cause the air to rapidly expand resulting in a shattered mug. Always make sure the mug you use is in good condition prior to microwaving anything in it.
